A whim of nature?

Each gene is present in two copies - one from the mother, the other from the father. If an irregularity occurs, the other copy compensates for it in many cases. However, this is not possible with about 100 human genes. The reason: The paternal or maternal copy was already shut down during the germ cell development by a natural mechanism. How does this work?
